I have been curious lately, and considering I have three humans and one troll in my session, I am wishing to discuss cultural differences. I remember some of the talking in the IRC, but I think everyone on the fora should be invited to talk about it.
I'm not sure what to talk about first... so anyone can ask me a question or raise a topic I guess.

Me? I'm a Yssaniar. Currently in my session there is only me and one other of my species. We don't seem to pop up very often. Which is a little troublesome for our extremely social nature.

No, I wouldn't call it a hierarchal society. We usually liked in family dens of around ten to twenty individuals. Usually it's run by the Broodmother and her three mates, the Denkeepers. So I guess one could venture a guess and say we are matriarchal. We don't really have a branching, overbearing government, each den regulates themselves.
I'm curious as to how Troll romance works. My Troll co-player talked about having a mate, but something about not having a pale or black relationship? I'm not quite sure what I'm missing.

Huh, what do you know, I was just getting ready to start a Species FAQ, but this is a great idea. *smiles*
Don't worry SF, I'm kinda new to everyone out here, too. Speaking of, I heard from my current co-players that trolls have a hierarchy system based on blood color? I'm having a bit of trouble wrapping my head around that, I guess.
If anyone, um. runs into a race they can't identify, I might be able to help. My first session co-players were, um, kinda weird by everyone else's standards.
Oh, and I can answer human questions too, I guess. *shrugs*

the hierarchy of Alternian society was based on the chroma of ones blood indeed
it was a cruel system, promoting mentally unstable blue and violet blooded over brown and green blooded trolls, that were much saner.
our Romance on the other hand is much more interesting
all Quadrants serve their purpose in growth of a person, both reproductive and conciliatory
Caliginous Quadrant is reproductive passionate rivalry, and makes each Kismesis stronger and sharper Ashen Quadrant is a form of "mediation" between two trolls, that otherwise would form a dysfunctional Black pair, by an Auspicite, the third troll, that antagonizes them both, to redirect their hate Pale Quadrant is conciliatory romance that hopefully makes both trolls saner and more functional, that pair is called Moirails Flushed Quadrant is reproductive Pity relationship, where each of the Matesprits recognizes the other ones failings, but instead disgust they feel the need to care for that person
I am sorry for this "infodump"
I tried to be as brief as possible

Crruel is not the corrrrect worrd. It is a system thhat has lasted thhousands of yearrs. I chhallenge you to find one morre stable. Thherre is no point in giving power to thhose whho will die in a scant few tens of sweeps, rrathher thhan hhundrreds.
I wonderr thhat a fellow trroll would thhink othherrwise, thhoughh it would appearr thhat you arre one thhat hhides hhis caste. Forr whhat rreason, I wonderr?

...That sounds totally neat. I may have to forward someone that post about the four romances thing. Hmmm. >.> I have some nosy troll questions, if you don't mind? Just. How do trolls gender? Like, you have at least two different genders, right? I think I've seen trolls using both of English's traditional personal pronouns anyway (he/she). So, what then? Is it tied to biological/genetic sex? If so, don't you have people who don't socially identify with what their physical sex is? Either way, don't you have people who prefer to opt out entirely? These things seem to confuse the (admittedly few) trolls I've talked to and I never know how to explain it to them. And, @as: Wow, your culture sounds neat! You must be lonely though, away from your den. You mentioned being pretty social, as a whole. You didn't play with any of your siblings? (or, um. I don't know if you differentiate based on which of the Denkeepers sired you...? Where I grew up, any children you grew up in the same household with were considered siblings, regardless of parentage, but that's not super common even with humans. Lol, hippies.) I don't know what your cultural gestures of comfort are, but in the meantime, I'll offer lots of internet hugs.

That is fasinating. You have so many diverese types of romance. Usually we have one type, which is part reproductive and part protection.
We generally have our relationships in fours. One female with her three male partners. The female is usually in charge, with the males guarding the young and gathering food. Often times they do switch roles, rotating the Broodmother position between the four. It helps with genetic diversity in the young, which helps with survival. Pup mortality is high due to illness, and a more diverse genepool makes them tougher and more resistant to the illnesses that usually plauges the younger generation.
@aa: We consider all three Denkeepers our 'fathers'. Considering how we are able to switch physical genders, it doesn't matter really who your technical genetic parents were. Also yes, I did play with some of my siblings, but they're in different sessions now. Every pup in a den is considered siblings, so we do share that in common.

I wonderr thhat a fellow trroll would thhink othherrwise, thhoughh it would appearr thhat you arre one thhat hhides hhis caste. Forr whhat rreason, I wonderr?should you use your think pan and add two simple facts it would be clear that one who disagrees with haemospectrum system would not identify with the color of his body fluids I am sure that Moderators would disallow any haemist comments, so refrain yourself Fellow Knight, we discern male and female gender, but for the purpose of reproduction they are really not important compared to human, or at least I think so.

((I'm being vague because I'm pretty sure we all have different headcanons here and enforcing one over another seems rude.))
[Rrangoon warrning.]
AS: Thhat would involve explaining ourr rreprroductive system, whhichh would be distasteful to me. I would rrathherr not thhink about both it and aliens in thhe same hheadspace. Suffice to say thhat we do hhave different genders, thhey arre not considerred a big deal, and it gets complicated whhen you considerr the existence of Mothher Grrubs and Imperrial Drrones, whho arre a subset of thhe trroll species and arre thherreforre equally given to suchh thhings as pronouns.
RP: At least thhat makes it easy to deterrmine hemorrebels.

Hey, settle down now. I will not have caste fighting in this thread. This is a polite discussion about cultural differences. And if it makes a difference, my species has naturally blue colored blood. It's amazing that you all have different colored blood, but it shouldn't mean that much right now. We are all equals in this crazy game.
