Well, GGTG's FaQ mentions Banes briefly. (In the "titles and values" chapter.) It says: It is a "beast brought forward by an Aspect"; basically, a mighty force-of-nature that embodies the aspect, as well as your own principles. I don't know much about Mist, so I can't help you there, but in my current case, (Bane of Law), it's basically Retribution and Justice incarnate. I think? I'm kinda new to being a Bane myself.
Also, oh man, pre-Sburb memes, haven't seen one of those in a while, heh.

You're in luck, as I happen to be pretty familiar with Banes. I'll admit that some of this may be coloured by my aspect (Hope) and my personal experiences with the title, but most of it should apply in other cases.
Generally, a Bane or Sylph is supposed to stand for their principles and Aspect in a way that protects, nurtures and supports their team. If someone is down, pick them up. If someone is in danger, protect them. If they're scared, teach them to be brave. If they're in trouble, yank them out of it. If something threatens them, kill it dead.
The biggest difference between Banes and Sylphs, in my experience, is that Banes are a lot more aggressive, and a lot less talky. A Sylph will explain the philosophies that sustain them, maybe try to convince their team to see things their way. Not all of them are preachy, but most of them will subtly suggest ways you could do better. A Bane doesn't care, they believe and that's enough for them. They believe to such an extent, and with such intensity, that it's scary. They believe so hard, and care so much, that it's like this pressure inside their heads straining against their skulls, like a light that shines out through all the cracks.
You're the big scary monster, fuelled by principle and aspect, and anything that fucks with your team is going to get it's throat torn out. Maybe your team is scared of you. They'll probably never say thank you either. You don't care, you'll protect them anyway. You'll cross every line, shatter every limit you ever knew and cast away every last scrap of humanity if that's what it takes, all so that that bunch of whiny, incompetent crybabies don't have to. And you'll never complain about it, not once, because you could never live with yourself if you'd done otherwise.
If your aspect was a terrifying monster, that monster would be you.

Basically I agree with eD, yet he forgot about one thing that is important for a Bane.
This is a Passive Class. It is the Sylph that would strife for her ideals. Bane is a guardian, a nurturer, no less a monster, but also a caretaker. In mythologies Banes would be less "heroes" and more "thereshold Guardians" like Cerberus, watchhound of the Underworld (Probably a Bane of Void). You have to watch over your team, and also your Land, your Whisperings, your Consorts, anything you identify with ann can say it is "yours".
Lesson, that Banes are supposed to learn is being Responsible.

I am a bane myself, right now. The main shticks of the class are, in its Flow formulation, never stopping to go forward and purging heathens in righteous infernos.
The bane's characteristics include being opinionated and imposing their opinions on others, through strife both verbal and physical. It's why they make excellent PK antidotes. Very often, people will be of the opinion that killing other players is bad, or at least, terribly impolite.
The other side of the champion class is that it makes you go ahead. You are given a goal, or set one for yourself. And you are going to trample whatever stands in your way on your way there. The "being responsible" part boss is talking about is about choosing your goals judiciously.

The default mentality of the Champion Class is:
When something has to be done, you're the first person to stand up and leave the room
As the active class, Sylphes are people that self-invests themselves with a mission. They are like avengers or stubborn helpers that you never asked for. They're not allowed to say "this would be great" and then do not it.
As the passive title, Banes are like a minion, lackey or goon. They are challenged to be stubbornly steadfast to other people's principles. Their job is to be more than dedicated: they have to be aggressively loyal like a hound. If someone says that a job has to be done, the Bane's job is to stride forward, smash through a door, laugh and yell "that person says hi". It is much like a well-paid mercenary that cannot say no to any request.
Banes are sometimes seen as bodyguards, much like Knights. However, the Knight is perfectly allowed to fight for the sake of other people even if they never ask for it, or aren't even aware of it. Not the Bane. The Bane wants to be pointed in a direction and unleash a rampage. Some people go as far as to say that they crave a master.
