So one of my coplayers doesn't seem to speak English. I'm pretty sure she's Japanese, but she doesn't speak much at all. As there's a lot of aliens running around in other sessions, from the sounds of things, I would have thought that maybe there was translation of some sort going on in Sburb, but maybe not so? Perhaps this is a glitch in our session? We are getting by alright so far, because we don't seem to need to talk much to coordinate when we fight, but I'm a bit worried about later on, when we might need clearer strategies, because we certainly needed them in my last session.
So, uh, advice- has anyone else had a language barrier with a coplayer, and how did you deal with it?

I had a language barrier in both of my sessions so far. First one was Russian and this one is Hungarian. We got around it through the installation of a translator app on our chat client, it's not 100% accurate but it's a helluva lot better than Babelfish. I don't know about alien languages though, maybe "Sburb" thinks that anyone from the same world should be able to communicate without it having to translate. Maybe try talking to her while she's asleep if you share a "Moon" and work out some sort of system there for verbal communication. At least in my experience this session, talking while dreaming tends to work out well for crossing language barriers.

Translation is usually handled by Sburb, communication would be impossible otherwise. Even if you both call your language the same name you're probably actually speaking very different languages without realising it. What I call 'English' for instance, has very little to do with the language you're speaking in.
It does occasionally fail to work for folks from the same world, or just plain stop working due to other glitches, in which case I'd recommend getting your hands on some translation software like IC suggested. Failing that, you could get someone from outside your session to pass messages for you if necessary, as they should get the full benefit of the translation effect unless something is seriously glitched in your session.

Translation is usually automatic and works for every vocal language ever. I suppose you must have gotten a glitch that fucked that part up. The chat clients also have an auto translater. I'm not 100% what the limit on that is, but most seem able to parse a language not seen on Earth, so you should be fine if you stick to that.

Well... The language barrier can be crossed with translation programs. If you prefer more... sburban approach, you could alchemize two diffrent computers (electronics have Mind Quintessence - communication falls into Mind's purview). That should make up for translation.
If that method fails, then you would be able to speak in Dreams, or after Ascending. First God Tier reward is "Gift of Gab" that pretty much allows you to speak and understand ALL languages, with the exception of Broodfester and Angelsong.

Alright, thank you all so much. After much prodding, and the weirdest non-verbal argument I've ever had, I got Momo to use the chat client for something other than photos. The autotranslate on the chat seems to work just fine for us, and now she won't stop chatting during battle which is lucky, because I feel a long way from God Tier at the moment, and we're on different moons.
Thank you, again!

There is a weird bit of lore about the autotranslator, and it's that it only works if the person wants to be understood and if there is anyone around that might not understand otherwise.
I think that is designed to work with assholes like me that will find their Norwegian Dame of Void and ask them to speak some German with them (we both speak it fluently) to brush it up some. And you can ask the other guys, when I cursed in Russian only Vitt could understand me.

And sometimes it's part of a plot thing. I got this one status as part of a Maturity Quest where I could only speak archaic Ammue until I finished the quest. It was super annoying.
The street involved was deceit, for some reason? I think it was trying to fix my communication issues (e.g. not explaining my plans to the group because it would take forever and they still wouldn't get it).I guess that's lying by omission or something? It was friggin' weird.
